RAF Driffield circa May 2003

Since the late 1970s, the four remaining “C Type” aircraft hangers have been used to store grain by the Rural Payments Agency (formally the Intervention Board).  Compared to the rest of the camp, the hangers are a credit to the Rural Payments Agency and are well preserved. In August 2003, the last of approximately 2,000 tons of grain left the stores at Driffield, marking the closure of these facilities.  Valued at £1.053m, it is thought likely (according to both Defence Estates and the Rural Payments Agency sources) that the hangers at Driffield will be transferred to the Ministry of Defence.

Sighted from the Rural Payments Agency's enclave parts of the adjoining camp are visible.  As the accompanying photographs show the decay of some of the concrete structures is evident.  It is important to note that although in a poor condition these buildings are repairable and as such should not be consigned to history or the wrecking ball.

In recent months the Officer Married Quarters on Ramsden Close (below) were placed on the market and quickly snapped up.  Sadly the former RAF Gymnasium located near the Driffield Show Ground didn't fare as well. Owned by the Driffield Rugby Club this building was demolished following the completion of a replacement structure.
